I admit it. I do most of my grocery shopping at Wally-world because it's convenient. I also hit Winn Dixie for 2 for 1 deals on stuff like chicken etc.

Publix has such a small variety of products as does super Target. At least Wal-Mart has a bigger variety, good for them! That said, this area needs a real grocery store like the ones up North, where they have everything imaginable and fun to shop at. The stores, up North, took me 2 hours to get through! If I spent 2 hours at Publix, they'd arrest me for loitering! LOL.

I know...stores like Wegmans, Meijers and even Super Kroger put Publix to shame. Publix is very limited with their inventory and often don't have many things I see advertised on TV for quite some time, if at all. People love them but it's about what you're used to I suppose.

Have you ever asked Publix to see if the item you can't find is available for them to order for you? I know my son does special orders all the time at his store. Not all Publix stores will sell the same items. They try to have what the local community wants. If something does not sell well it does not get ordered. For example not all stores have Kobe beef but in stores where it will sell they do.

How do they know what the local community wants if they don't bother to stock it in the first place? I live in a somewhat upscale area (Lake Mary/Heathrow/Alaqua) and it has taken a considerable amount of coaxing to get the local store to carry a selection of Grassfed Beef, Free Range Chicken, Natural Pork (which is still very limited in availability for them) and even a decent range of organic vegetables....all of which surprise, surprise have been selling quite well. We don't have a Whole Foods in our area sadly so we're stuck with Publix, although thankfully a smaller natural grocer (Earth Origins) has opened here with a small selection of items which helps when I can't get it at Publix.

No doubt since there largely isn't another option.

Winn Dixie
Super Target
Super Walmart/Walmart Neighboorhood market
Aldi

All of the above, esp the last 3 keep publix on its toes for basic grocery shopping. I know Wal-mart is getting very aggressive with publix with its marketing campaign on billboards and TV having people compare receipts.

They've even supposedly started matching Publix's popular BOGO sales

The issue largely is that Publix doesn't care, there's not enough competition. Winn-Dixie has been on the brink of extinction for so long and has such a poor reputation (despite a noticeable uptick in quality with remodels) that they're not really a factor, also considering how few locations they have in comparison. Aldi is a different animal with no comparable products and a bare bones approach that most don't find appealing. I don't imagine many utilize Aldi for everyday shopping, especially for meats and produce. Target and WalMart probably run closest but they're national chain big-box stores that many don't like the hassle of getting in and out of. WalMart has a nasty reputation (as a company and with store conditions) so I don't think Publix is necessarily sweating it out with them either since the prevailing demographic shopping there (30K a year average income) finds Publix too expensive anyway. Lastly Target while generally clean and not gross to shop in doesn't have anywhere near the selection of Publix, so if one prefers certain items they're typically not available there.

That leftist dogma has been false for sometime. Why do you think Steve Jobs let Wal-mart sell Apple products? Do you think that's who they are selling IPhones to?

If you actually read the link I provided, you will see that Wal-mart has made significant inroads in the grocery market the last several months. I suspect that matching Publix's BOGO will only accelerate this trend and force Publix to compete more effectively

Quote:

Walmart has been aggressively fighting for a larger share of Tampa Bay's grocery dollars. Last year, Walmart ranked second with more than 26 percent of the market, up from single digits several years ago. Publix led with 43 percent.

The war has been tough on smaller grocers that can't compete on price but also can't compete with Publix's darling reputation.

Earlier this year, Sweetbay closed 33 underperforming stores and later was bought out by Winn-Dixie's parent company. Prior to that, Albertson's shuttered all but a few of its Florida stores.
